Frederik VI lying in state. Painted by S.P.L. Schack. The long standing tradition of depicting deceased monarchs "in state" was not just something of the early absolutism, but was maintained in the 1800 hundreds as well.

The Sceptre
The Sceptre, gold with enamel and table-cut diamonds. Made for the coronation of Frederik III in 1648 by an unknown goldsmith in Copenhagen. Used at anointings during the period of Absolutism until 1840.

1900-1925
The early 20th century was a dramatic time for Europe. World War I broke out in 1914 and ended after four years and nine million dead. The Russian Revolution broke out in 1917. This was to have far-reaching consequences for the Danish born Empress Dagmar (Maria Feodorovna), who lost many family members and had to flee, first to England and later to Denmark. In Denmark the parliamentarian system was introduced in 1901.
