Queen Louise’s salon
Queen Louise’s private salon was, just as the study of her husband, Christian IX, arranged in Victorian style. Whereas Christian IX arranged his study on the ground floor of the Palace, Queen Louise arranged her salon in the bel étage – the floor above the ground floor of the Palace.
The Queen’s private salon was changed continously from 1865 until her death in 1898. The furniture was given new upholstery, new curtains were put up and more items were added, including photographs and paintings.
A general feature in Victorian style was that expensive and cheap items were mixed together. There are several things in Queen Louise’s salon that did not possess any great financial value but nevertheless represented a sentimental value for the King and Queen. This was contemporary with industrialisation, when things could be mass produced and sold cheaply. The fact that it was mass produced only added to the charm as it was more fun to own copies than original items during this period.
