Panelled ceiling
The panelled ceiling in the Blue Chamber was gilt during Abildgaard's refurbishment between 1794-8 and appears as such today. In 1857 the colour of the room was changed to silverplated panels with blue fillings, surrounded by lighter colours and the name was changed to Her Majesty's Dressing Room. During renovation in 1994 it was recreated in accordance with Abildgaard's drawings and archeological investigations.

The heart-shaped frame made from gilt brass was a golden wedding present to Christian IX from Queen Louise.

Nicolai Abildgaard
The painter and architect Nicolai Abildgaard is well-known for many renowned artworks, the most famous of which is The Wounded Philoctetes, painted in Rome. He was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts aged 21 in 1764. He spent the years 1772-7 in Rome where he saw the great paintings from the Renaissance and the heritage from antiquity.
