Frederik III, 1663

Enamel portrait of Frederik III. Made by Paul Prieur, 1663. The portrait is a masterpiece, since the enamel’s melting point limits both the number of colours and the size of the miniature.

3: Christian IV's Bedroom

King Christian IV died here on 28th February 1648. This room, together with the two preceding rooms, constituted his private chambers, and from here he had direct access to a toilet and a bathroom.

Trouser Watering Chair

Armchair from the time of Frederik III, which is ingeniously constructed to grab hold of guests using hidden tentacles in the armrests.

Diamond ring

Ring of enamelled gold with diamonds. The ring, with a phallus and a woman’s hand, was possibly Frederik III’s comment on Queen Sophie Amalie’s affair with a valet, when it was discovered in 1664.

Bust of Frederik III

Wax bust of Frederik III. The cabinet of curiosities contained waxworks of several of the members of the royal family. The custom is also found in other royal courts. They were usually made after a life or death mask, but the king’s was modelled by Louis-Augustin le Clerc in Copenhagen in 1751, many years after the king’s death. The two sedan chair-like lockers were made by Dietrich Schäfer in 1751-52.

Paul Prieur

Paul Prieur was a painter of miniatures and enameller. He was born in Paris and was trained there and in Geneva as a goldsmith and enameller. Between 1659 and 1681 he lived in Denmark, working for the Royal Court.
