Gold chalice

Gold chalice with enamelled painting.
On the cup the eight virtues, inside eight symbols with references from the Sermon on the Mount Sinai, and the bottom contains an angel conquering death. At the bottom half of the chalice one can find flowers as well as the signature of Georg Strauch, 1648.
This year along with the symblic religious messages could refer to the truce of the 30 years war. Alternatively it might have been crafted for the coronation of Frederik III which took place the same year. Strauch was considered one of the best enamel-craftsmen, and this chalice represents the latest fashion especially recognizable for instance by the flowers.

Coronation robe

Coronation robe of red silk velvet, embroidered in golden thread with 1400 royal crowns and lined with white rabbit fur. The edge of the upper side is made from ermine. Christian V wore this robe at his coronation in 1671.

Coronation Cup

The so-called Coronation Cup of Frederik III. The cup was made by H.C. Brechtel in The Hague, 1653. It is possible that it was to have been used, in a planned but never realised, swearing of allegience to Frederik III in Hamburg, 1654.

Coronation robe

Caroline Amalie’s coronation robe; a gold embroidered bodice made of white satin with golden laces at the neck and on the sleeves. The skirt is also made of gold embroidered satin.

Chalice, paten, wafer box and altar jug of gold with engraving in niello, white and black enamel, sapphires and diamonds.

Bust of Frederik III

Wax bust of Frederik III. The cabinet of curiosities contained waxworks of several of the members of the royal family. The custom is also found in other royal courts. They were usually made after a life or death mask, but the king’s was modelled by Louis-Augustin le Clerc in Copenhagen in 1751, many years after the king’s death. The two sedan chair-like lockers were made by Dietrich Schäfer in 1751-52.

1625-1650

The second half of Christian IV's reign became a time of recession. The economic crisis became more severe, and at the same time the fortunes of war turned.

Frederik III

Frederik III was the King of Denmark-Norway from 1648; he was married to Sophie Amalie of Brunswick-Lüneburg in 1643 and father to Christian V.
