Equestrian figurine
Equestrian silver figurine. The figure, showing Frederik III tilting at the ring, is driven by clockwork. Made in Copenhagen by Jørgen Stichmand, probably around 1650. Ring jousting, along with other physical displays performed on horseback, was very popular during the renaissance because it combined bot physical cunning and the use of a weapon – both virtues ascribed to chivalry and noble heritage. Notice the similarity to the equestrian statue of Christian IV in the Winter room, linking him both through lineage and physical appearence.
